Here are a few quick tips for turning your home into your personal oasis of calm:
2. Try to decorate your entrance space with your favorite paintings, furniture, flowers or something that will create an immediate sense of happiness as soon as you open the door to your home.
3. Declutter. An overabundance of possessions can actually drain your spiritual energy. Also pay attention to the emotional association that you have with your possessions. If they bring you negative memories or emotions, discard them. If you haven’t touched an item in decades, you probably do not need it!
4. Make your bed every day. In the press of things to do before leaving for work or taking the kids to school, this can seem like an impossible chore. But, according to Zen Buddhism the state of your bed is a mirror of the state of your mind.
5. Create a personal space for yourself, decorated with the things that bring you joy and peace. Let everyone know that when you are in this room, nook or cranny, you are not to be disturbed. Keep it absolutely free of all work files, bills, computers—all the things that bring you back to the outside reality.
There are many other things you can do to turn your home into that island get-away. The most important thing is to keep as much of the negativity and stress outside the walls of your home as possible.
